To be fit and healthy you need to be physically active. Regular physical activity can help protect you from serious diseases such as obesity, heart disease, cancer, mental illness, diabetes and arthritis. Riding your bicycle regularly is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of health problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle.

Cycling is a healthy, low-impact exercise that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from young children to older adults. It is also fun, cheap and good for the environment.

Riding to work or the shops is one of the most time-efficient ways to combine regular exercise with your everyday routine. An estimated one billion people ride bicycles every day – for transport, recreation and sport.

The YMCA has several programs to get youth and adults on their bikes safely:

Bike It! Youth Bicycle Education Program: Bike It! is open to kids aged 10-15, and consists of eight sessions held on Saturdays, in the spring and fall, from 9am to noon.  Each session includes instruction and a bike ride.  All participants receive a T-shirt, water bottle, patch kit and bike multi-tool.  Bikes and helmets are provided, or bring your own.  Registration for the next session will open in August.  The cost is $40.00 for YMCA Members and $60.00 for Non-members.  Scholarships are available – no one is turned away.

12th Annual Tour De Kingston and Ulster, Sunday June 25, Forsyth Park, Kingston.  Rides for all ages and abilities.  Road rides are 25 and 50 miles, Road and Trail Rides are 10, 18 and 32 miles and the Kingston Family Ride is a flat and easy 5 miles.  The Family Ride is FREE and is escorted by Tour De Kingston Road Marshals and the Kingston Police Department.  BBQ lunch, raffle and scholarship awards follow the rides.  Sponsors include the YMCA, Westchester Medical Center Health Network/HealthAlliance, Herzogs/Kingston Plaza, Academy General Insurance, Bike Brothers Bike Shop and Rondout Savings Bank. To register or for more information, go to the website: www.tourdekingston.com

Mountain Bike Camp: For youth aged 12-15, the YMCA is offering two, one week sessions of mountain bike camp at its Camp Seewackamano facility in Shokan.  Camps will operate from 9am to 4pm, July 10 to 14 and August 14 to 18.  Campers develop mountain bike skills through trail rides and games and spend four days at offsite at trail locations (which may include Lippman Park, Ferncliff Forest, Elm Ridge, Lake Minnewaska State Park or others).  Basic bicycle safety and maintenance as well as environmental responsibilities that come with outdoor recreation will be covered.  A geared bicycle in good working order, with off-road tires measuring at least 2 inches in width, and helmet are required.  This is an intermediate level program and is not intended for beginners.  Camper/Staff ratio 8:1.  Registration information is available online at http://ymcaulstercountycamps.campbrainregistration.com/ or at the Membership Office at the Y.  Camp fees are $325.00 per week.

The Bicycle Education program is directed by Tom Polk, Bicycle Educator for the YMCA.  He is a life-long cyclist and has been instructing youth and adults in safe cycling for the past 8 years.  Tom holds a certification from the League of American Bicyclist as a League Cycling Instructor and is certified as a Mountain Bike Guide by the International Mountain Bike Association.
