Don't Procrastinate!

Starts August 16th, 2010

Placement in youth swim classes are based on your child’s current swimming ability.  At the start of each session, our instructors will evaluate your child’s skills to ensure that they match the skills required for each level.  Based on that evaluation, we may work with you to move your child to a more appropriate class.  Swim report cards will be given out at the end of each session.   Ccontact aquatics with any questions or concerns @ 338-3810 ext 114 or email cvigeant@ymcaulster.org

Parent Child Programs

Skip’s
Ages 6-24 months with parent


This is a parent and child swimming enrichment program. Through songs and nursery rhymes children are encouraged to be comfortable in the pool and begin learning swimming strokes.

Tuesday: 9:45 am – 10:15 am, 1:15 pm – 1:45 pm

Saturday: 9:00 am – 9:30 am, 11:30 am – 12:00 pm

Pike with Parent
Ages 2-4 years with parent


Parents accompany children in the water. Children continue to learn skills with parents and prepare to move on to independent lessons. This class is designed for the older toddler, a child with special needs, or a child who is hesitant to enter the water.

Just for Kids

Preschool Swim Lessons
Ages 3-5 years


This program will focus primarily on swimming skills and safety. Preschoolers will concentrate on being comfortable in the water and improving their swimming abilities. They will learn and refine their strokes and develop personal safety skills.
Pike – Children learn how to paddle on their front, back, and sides, as well as how to float on both their front and back. Instructional flotation devices will be used.
Eel – Children work on developing endurance, rhythmic breathing, jumping in the pool, and horizontal body position. Instructional flotation devices used.
Ray – Children work on swimming the length of the pool on their front and backs, and are introduced to rotary breathing, treading water, and sitting dives. Children must be able to swim without an instructional flotation device.
Starfish – Children develop style and technique in both swimming and diving, and learning the crawl stroke with rotary breathing and the backstroke. Children must swim without a flotation device and demonstrate an understanding of rotary breathing.

Youth Swim Lessons

Ages 6-12 years

This is a progressive skill-building program where children work on further refining their swimming skills and knowledge of pool safety.
Polliwog – Children learn beginning paddle skills, water safety, front and back floats, and reaching assists. Instructional flotation device may be used.
Guppy – Children begin working on front crawl, sidestroke, backstroke, and rhythmic breathing.
Minnow – Your child will work on continued development of front and back crawl, breaststroke, increasing endurance, learning emergency procedures and personal safety.
Fish – your child will continue refining all five main strokes, begin learning the dolphin kick and basic first aid. Goals also include swimming the front crawl, backstroke and elementary backstroke for 200 yards in good form.
Flying Fish/Shark – Your child will continue refining all five main strokes, including inverted breaststroke, trudged crawl, and elementary backstroke with a focus on improving efficiency and endurance. In addition, stroke work will include individual medley, lifesaving medley, front and back flip turns, and streamlining.

Porpoise Club
Ages 10-15

This program allows children to continue to develop their swimming abilities in a non-competitive environment. The club will focus on advanced aquatic skills, teambuilding, leadership training, and safety. The completion of shark level is required.

Teen/Adult Swim Lessons
Ages 13+

Beginner – You will learn basic swimming skills such as the crawl stroke, breathing techniques, and floating to help you gain confidence in the water
Intermediate – Adults with some swimming skills will learn the proper technique of front crawl and backstroke, while increasing swimming endurance.

Swim Easy

A study of swimming form and function to swim easier with less effort. Smoother, longer, and safer swimming for intermediate to advanced swimmers.

Advanced Programs

Swim Clinic

This class will concentrate on stroke mechanics of the crawl, back, breast, and fly strokes as well as endurance swimming. Students meet for class once a week and are to attend a lap swim once a week.

Lifeguard Certification Course

Ages 15+
Must be 16 yrs old by completion of course, no exceptions.

Participants will learn lifesaving, standard first aid, blood born pathogens protocol, and CPR/AED. Attendance of every class is required for the completion. Upon completion they will receive their certifications from the American Red Cross.

Aqua Jogging

The Y’s Aqua jogging program is a deep water aquatic exercise program performed in the deep end of the pool choreographed to music. The Y provides weight belts for individual’s participation.

AQUA-CISE

Aqua-cise is a low-impact water supported exercise class that uses water resistance to increase muscle tone and flexibility.

Water Zumba

Water Zumba is one of the best overall workouts available to those who are serious about getting and staying in shape! Taught by a certified Zumba instructor, it is energizing, powerful, uplifting and a fun and effective way to burn calories and tone your muscles.

Y-Aquarobics

Y-AQUAROBICS is a water dance aerobics program with routines choreographed to music and performed in the shallow end of the pool for both the swimmer and non-swimmer. It is a total physical fitness program providing for a sense of well-being and aiding in the development of cardio-vascular fitness. Range of motion is increased.  By adding an extra work load on the body, water’s resistant qualities further tax the muscles and their oxygen supply.  Also, the coolant property of the water relieves fatigue, tension and stress.
